Their pricing was fair, but saving a couple of bucks to work with someone like Hank just isn't worth the headache. I'll also add that I would never recommend working with someone that requires more than 50% prior to the completion of the project. I actually wouldn't have hired them if I had known this up front. It was my error for not asking and assuming it would be 50 down/50 upon completion (as it was with the other painters and contractors we spoke with).
I proposed a number for the refund that was completely fair. I had two other contractors review the work to help me establish the amount. Hank countered with a much lower number. I was hoping to settle somewhere in the middle, but no such luck. The work that had been completed thus far was average, at best, but it was the way Hank handled everything that gets them a 1-star. It was absurd. He was verbally abusive, made sexist insults, insulted me about my education (or rather his assumptions about my education), and more. I seriously couldn't believe his behavior.
We initiated a contract with these guys that we needed to cancel before the work was completed (long story as to why, but it was not related to their work or finances—just another project arose that was going to complicate and disrupt the painting they were doing). Their contract required 50% up front, another 36% at the halfway point and the remaining 14% upon completion. We had paid out more on the contract than work had been done so we would be due a refund upon cancellation. I was expecting some negotiating over the appropriate amount to refund, but was not expecting Hank’s (the owner) unprofessional, hateful vitriol over the matter.
I’m sorry to say that what started out well didn’t end the same. Without going into a long drawn out story I felt the job wasn’t completed before the crew left with their quite substantial check. Getting them to return to really complete the job took some doing. Then I had to deal with hank who I felt didn’t want to hear my complaints and instead defended his son pretty much accusing me of being wrong but ended saying he doesn’t argue with clients (after just doing so). I wouldn’t feel comfortable hiring them again
